When the operator cranks the handle back and forth, the small piston (pump core) reciprocates within the pump body. When lifting, the suction valve opens, and hydraulic oil is drawn into the pump body from the reservoir; when pressing down, the suction valve closes, and pressurized oil is released through the outlet valve into the cylinder.
